Cut adhesive vinyl decals with your Silhouette Cameo to make these Harry Potter mugs!
This was one of the first projects I ever did with vinyl and it was my gateway craft.
Once I figured out the cut settings and the decals I wanted to use it all came together nicely. Even if I did have some hiccups at the beginning.
If you are new to vinyl decals, bigger is better.
Starting out with a small decal with lots of little pieces can cause frustration if you don’t have a lot of experience with cutting and weeding small designs.
If you want to be a little adventurous, I have a whole tutorial with tips on how to cut and weed small vinyl designs!
So I will always suggest starting out with a larger decal and then, as you gain more experience, you can start experimenting with smaller sizes.
Commonly asked questions about these Harry Potter mugs
Where can you find blank mugs for projects?
Amazon, Target, and Dollar Tree are my favorite places to find blanks for projects.
If I am keeping the mugs for myself I typically go buy cheap ones from Dollar Tree. But if they’re a gift I splurge a little at Target or Amazon.
Where can you find images for the mugs?
Tons of places! Facebook groups (Accio Cameo is my favorite) and even google all have images you can trace in your software.
You do have to be very careful with copyrighted images though. Harry Potter is all copyrighted so you cannot sell what you make with Harry Potter things on it.
Anything Harry Potter I have made has always been for me or my child. So please remember that if you’re doing Harry Potter themed crafts!
And yes, I do realize that people on Etsy sell Harry Potter crafts and files. It is illegal and they can get in a lot of trouble if they get caught. I know recently Warner Brothers has sent out warnings to Etsy shop owners to tell them to take down HP themed listings.
I am telling you this because I believe in being transparent and honest about this!
How do you open the images in the Silhouette software?
What type of vinyl is best for these Harry Potter mugs?
Adhesive vinyl will always be best. It’s a permanent type of vinyl that can hold on to a material for a long time if you take care of your mug!
I have a mandala mug that has held up for 4-5 years at this point and it’s still going strong!
What type of transfer tape should you use on your mugs?
There are all different kinds you can use but my favorite is either gridlined transfer tape or paper transfer tape.
It’s really personal preference so trying each one is the only way to figure out which is your favorite.

How do you remove bubbles in your vinyl decals after applying it to the mugs?
There are a few ways to do this, but my favorite is using the wet method.
Another way you can remove bubbles is by using a needle and poking the holes to pop them and then using your fingers to smooth it out. Don’t worry, you won’t be able to see the little hole you’ve made at all!
Can you put these mugs in the dishwasher?
No! Please do not put them in the dishwasher, the vinyl will not hold up in the extreme heat.
You must hand wash your mugs in warm soapy water. Just don’t let them soak!

Materials
- Blank coffee mugs
- Adhesive Vinyl
- Transfer Tape
- Harry Potter designs
Tools
Instructions
- Find the designs you want to use and open them in your software.
- Load your vinyl into your machine and check the cut settings in your Silhouette Software.
- When you're ready, cut out the vinyl designs and weed them.
- Place your transfer tape on top of your vinyl design.
- Cut small slits in the transfer tape around your vinyl design (be very careful to not cut your vinyl decal).
- Place the center of your vinyl decal on the mug (keep the sides from touching the mug right now). Make sure it's straight and then rub your finger down the center.
- Then work your way from the middle of the vinyl decal to the outside. (reference the video in this post to see how it's done!).
- Once you've gotten your vinyl decal on the mug, peel back the transfer tape and admire your work!
Notes
These mugs are NOT dishwasher safe!
You have to hand wash them or else the vinyl will come off the mugs. Just don't soak them in soapy water!

I’m still new to the Silhouette world and I’ve never heard of oracle 651. Good to know that there’s extra sticky vinyl for things that will get lots of use and washed.
I just recently heard of it but I agree, it’s nice to know that you can use this stuff and it takes a long time to show any wear and tear!

So what is the difference between the oracle and the regular sticky vinyl? I was thinking of doing something like this using my cricut to make some mason jars with Apple monograms filled with pencils for my teacher friends for Christmas!
Oracle 651 is a more permanent vinyl that can last up to 6 years with gentle washing and handling! I’m not sure how long regular sticky vinyl will last though. I think if you’re giving someone a gift oracle 651 is the way to go because of the long life! And by the way, I think that’s such a cute idea for Christmas gifts this year!
