How To Make a Rustic Inspired Mason Jar Sign

That’s exactly how I feel about this mason jar sign.
Knowing what I know now I could’ve saved myself a lot of headache and stress. And I want to teach you how to rock your wood signs so you don’t have the steep learning curve I did!
This rustic fall sign can be an easy beginner craft for those who are just starting out. Especially if you buy the right kind of wood and use the right kind of vinyl.
It can also be a huge headache if you skip steps or cut corners.
Materials
Supplies needed to make this Happy Fall Y’all Wood Sign
- Adhesive vinyl from Expressions Vinyl
- A wood sign from Hobby Lobby
- Flowers from Hobby Lobby
- Wood stain (if your sign isn’t pre painted like the one linked above)
- White chalk paint (again, you only need this if your sign isn’t pre painted)
So let’s answer some common questions about this rustic inspired mason jar sign!
Can you use Silhouette or Cricut Brand vinyl for this sign?
I would recommend that you don’t use it because (in my experience) the vinyl doesn’t hold up as well.
I like to invest in good, premium vinyl which is why I almost always buy from Expressions Vinyl. Their shipping is super fast and you can usually find a sale going on to get even better prices.
What type of wood sign should you look for?
Your wood should be smooth if you are going to make a sign.
The wood I used was rough and no amount of sanding would’ve fixed it. That was the way the wood was and vinyl does not stick to something that is rough. You need a smooth surface.
If you don’t want to make your own sign, Hobby Lobby has a wide range of unfinished wood signs that you can use. The one linked here comes in 3 sizes and is smooth so there is no prep work.
However, if you want to make your own sign from start to finish you should get unfinished wood from Home Depot or Lowes. And you must sand your wood before you apply the vinyl!
What if my vinyl isn’t sticking to the wood?
Usually this happens if the vinyl isn’t on a smooth surface.
If you cannot sand your wood (or you choose not to, even though I advise against that), try painting a light layer of mod podge on the wood and then apply the vinyl.
Could you use stencil vinyl instead of adhesive vinyl?
Of course! It really is personal preference in how you want your piece to look once it is finished.
You will still need to sand your wood if you’re using unfinished wood though!

Rustic Inspired Mason Jar Sign
Learn how to get your vinyl to stick to wood and make this mason jar sign!
Materials
- Wood Sign from Hobby Lobby
- Wood Stain if using unfinished wood (I used Driftwood)
- Pre-stain wood conditioner
- Polycrylic
- White chalk paint and water
- Adhesive vinyl
- Transfer Tape
- Faux flowers
- Happy Fall SVG Cut File
Tools
- Silhouette Cameo
- Weeding Tool
- Application Tool
- Sander
- Hot glue gun
Instructions
If you are using unfinished wood....start here!
- Grab your wood sign, wood stain, pre-stain wood conditioner, and sand paper.
- Sand your wood sign until it's smooth. I highly suggest using a sander and starting with 220 grip sandpaper.
- Follow the directions on the pre-stain wood conditioner. Once dry, use the wood stain.
- Let the stain sit for 24 hours (per instructions on the container).
- Next, water down your chalk paint. Do 1 part water to 1 part chalk paint.
- Paint a light layer of the chalk paint mixture on your sign. If you get too much paint on your wood, wipe it away with a cloth!
If you are using pre-stained/painted wood....start here!
- Cut out the vinyl design and weed it.
- Place your transfer tape on top of your vinyl and pick it up.
- Then put it on your wood sign and rub the design down with the application tool.
- Peel up the transfer tape slowly. If your vinyl design comes up with it, place the transfer tape back down and use the application tool again. Continue to do this until your vinyl sticks to your wood!
How to apply the flowers
- Use wire cutters to cut off the stems on all of the flowers.
- Then use hot glue to put the flowers on your wood!

Hi Darlene. Unfortunately you cannot download files straight to your Silhouette. You can download the file onto your computer here (http://simplymadefun.com/HappyFallSVG) and then click FILE → OPEN and then click on the file to open it in your software. 🙂
After that you can SAVE the file to your Silhouette Library and then open it up within the software any time you like!
