Back in the 80’s I was the only kid in my classroom with a food allergy. The amount of anxiety I’d get over food-centered holidays still hangs around with me today. And now that my son is allergic to both dairy and peanuts that anxiety goes through the roof.

Most people mean well. They don’t understand how stressful food allergies are or how they can help ease some of that anxiety for parents.

But they try and I have to give them HUGE props for that. Because it is appreciated more than they’ll ever know.

Now that food allergies are more common and well known, they’re a little easier to navigate. It’s also easier because most parents know what you’re talking about when you mention food allergies, even if they have no experience with them themselves.

Unfortunately that doesn’t mean that it makes celebrations inside and outside a classroom any easier.

There are so many allergies to so many different things now that there will always be someone who is left out.

Or a parent who is silently freaking out over what their child will receive at school and if they’ll accidentally ingest something they aren’t supposed to. There is no break from the food allergy life.

The easiest way to make everyone comfortable is to stay away from food altogether. But when food is cheap compared to other options, it’s hard to say no to it.

So I’ve put together a list of non-candy Valentine’s that are perfect to give out at school!

These non-Candy Valentine’s are:

  • cheap,
  • candy free, and
  • food allergy friendly

Candy free doesn’t mean they have to be expensive or over the top. Bookmarks, bubbles, or even glow sticks make really fun Valentine’s day treats for the kids and they’ll get a kick out of getting something different than the candy.

As a mom, I appreciate not having to deal with a sugared-up kid at the end of the school day too. ?

Honestly though, I just love the fact that everyone can feel included with candy free Valentines. There’s a little something for everyone in this non candy Valentines roundup. That makes the celebration more fun!

  1. I can only imagine how stressful it must have been for you and your parents worrying about your peanut allergy back then. I always thought of using non-candy valentines in order to reduce the amount of junk in our kids’ diets, but you make a fantastic point that they are also a wonderful option to help include kids with allergies, too.

    1. It’s definitely a good idea to keep the amount of sugar the kids get to a minimum as well. There are definitely so many good reasons to do non-candy Valentine’s now-a-days, thank you for bringing up your point as well! That wasn’t something I considered when writing the post, but I definitely agree with you. 🙂
