Now that I have a working sewing machine again, I’m all about the pretty fabric.  And I mean I am all about it.  Lately our little one has been suffering from eczema (poor kid got it from me!) so I’ve been looking for ways to upgrade the things I am using on his skin.  And by upgrade, I mean looking for things that won’t irritate his already sensitive and dry skin!  Then, in the middle of the night I woke up and thought; organic washcloths.  Perfection.

To be honest, I’ve been looking for a reason to try organic cotton fabric.  My best friend made me a burp cloth using the softest fabric I’ve ever felt in my life, and it was all organic, so I wanted to give it a try myself.  And since my little one is having a horrible time with dry skin now thanks to this insanely cold weather we’re having, I knew that now would be the best time to try out all the things that would be gentle on his chapped skin.

Walking through the store one day I decided to make him a bath kit, complete with fun toys and a beauty bar that’s so much more gentle than regular soap (and great for a baby with eczema!).  I try not to go too crazy and buy the little guy something every time I’m in a store, but I saw that Whale Spout Cover and I just couldn’t help myself.  I mean, I’m all about making bath time fun but I knew that I also wanted it to be practical.  So I included a bit of both in my kit.

What You’ll Need for your bath kit:

I’ve tried many different soaps over the years for my own eczema, but I always come back toDove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar.  It’s not a soap, but a mild cleanser that adds moisture to the skin instead of stripping it away and it always calms down any eczema flare-ups I have.  So, after trying multiple different soaps on my kid I ended up trying the beauty bar, and it worked wonders.  I hated seeing him in pain from his chapped skin, so using something that was gentle enough for an infant that also added moisture back to his skin was crucial.

You know what else was crucial?  A gentle cloth to wash him with.  Because all that work picking out the perfect beauty bar wouldn’t have mattered if I used a harsh cloth to wash him with!

To make your own Organic Washcloths you’ll need:

  • Organic Cotton Fabric (1/4 yard)
  • Chenille fabric
  • Matching Thread

These are actually really easy to make and are a great beginner project if you’re just learning how to sew!

1.  Cut your fabric into 6.5 x 6.5 inch squares.  Lay fabric right sides together and pin the two pieces of fabric together.

2.  Using a 1.4 inch seam allowance, sew around three sides of the square.  On the fourth side leave a six-inch open gap that way you can flip your fabric right-side out when you’re done.

(this is what it should look like after you’ve flipped your fabric…which you shouldn’t do until after step 3!)

3.  Cut the corners of your square, making sure you don’t accidentally cut where the thread is!  Then turn your fabric right-side out.

4.  Top stitch the fabric to close up your six-inch gap, and you’re done!

I’m really excited about these organic washcloths and even used one to bathe the little guy the other night.  It was fantastic!  I actually liked it a lot better than the ones I’ve bought in the stores because his skin wasn’t red and irritated after I washed him.  That could have something to do with the beauty bar too though.

I know a few friends who are having babies this year and I think this bath kit would be so fun as a gift.  Any excuse to buy more pretty fabric to make all the baby things, right?  And of course, including the Dove sensitive skin beauty bar is a must too!  You don’t want to have to worry about dry chapped skin on your little one when you could be kissing those kissable cheeks all day instead.

What tips do you have for keeping your little one’s skin healthy during the cold winter months?
