DIY Christmas Table Runner

This year I’ve decided to really go all out in terms of Christmas decorating.  It truly is my favorite time of year and I love finding (and buying) things that I can use year after year. And now that I have officially tapped into my crafty side I thought it would be really fun to make a lot of my decorations this year.

I found this really cute centerpiece idea from Tatertots and Jello and knew I wanted to duplicate it.  But first, I needed a really cute table runner to go with it.  Since our Christmas tree color scheme is different shades of blue, white, and grey, I wanted something to match.  But I also wanted to incorporate a little bit of gold into this years color scheme as well.

So, I went to Joann Fabrics and picked up a beautiful blue damask fabric and headed off to Michaels to grab the wooden sleigh and reindeer.

To make the table runner I used:

-3 yards of damask fabric
-3 yards of batting or flannel (I used flannel)
-matching thread

ALL SEAM ALLOWANCES ARE 1/4 UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED

(sorry for the lack of pictures during the sewing process.  The lighting was horrible as it was a very cloudy/rainy day)

To start out, I cut my fabric and flannel 15 x 75 inches.  I got these measurements from Targets table runners (although I made mine a little wider and longer).

I then put the right sides of the fabric together, laid the flannel on top of one of the pieces, and pinned all three layers together.

Then I sewed down both sides of the fabric and made a very nice long tube.  I sewed one end and then sewed the other, leaving a six inch gap in the middle so I could pull the fabric through until it was right side out.

Next, I pressed my seams with the iron.

Then, I top stitched my runner to give it a finished look and to close the 6 inch gap!

The table runner brings a bit of color to the table and accents everything very nicely.  I love the color scheme and like that the fabric isn’t too “Christmasy” so I could use it year round if I wanted.  I also really love the gold reindeer (which go with that hideous apartment chandelier) and sleigh that sit on top of it!  (check back next week for a tutorial and up-close look at the sleigh!)
