They can add so much to your costume and are so fun to personalize with iron on vinyl.
I’ve done a few over the years like this Nightmare Before Christmas Tote and my Treat Yo Self Mickey tote, but this years trick or treat bags might be my favorite. It’s double sided AND matches our costumes for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party!
My son absolutely loves Monsters Inc, Monsters University and now Monsters at Work. He goes back and forth between Mike and Sully being his favorites but he would watch them all day every day if I let him.
These Monsters INC costumes are some of my favorites and I really like being able to make trick or treat bags that match our costumes.
It’s also a craft that isn’t expensive and is fairly easy to do, so perfect for beginners!

Common questions about layering iron on vinyl:
Do you need a heat press to make these bags?
No, you do not need a legit heat press to make these trick or treat bags. It does make it easier though because they are bigger and can press more of the design at one time than an iron.
You will need a pressing pillow when you’re pressing a tote bag because of all the seams, which you can read about here!
What type of canvas tote should I look for?
I buy all of my totes and my shirts for Disney trips from Jiffy Shirts!
Make sure that what you get is either Cotton or Polyester because anything else just doesn’t work well with a heat press.

Where do you buy your vinyl from?
I get all of my vinyl from Expressions Vinyl. Their shipping is fast and they always have what I want or need in stock.
For these totes I bought white, blue, and black heat transfer vinyl but I’ve also used holographic vinyl on these totes before too!
Where did you find the font for your trick or treat bags?
I own a ridiculous amount of fonts but sometimes I just can’t decide which one will look best for a a project!

For this project I just searched Monsters INC font on google and found this one to use. I wanted to stay pretty true to the movie and felt like this was a font that worked really well with our costumes and the bags.
FAQ’s for these Monsters INC Iron On Vinyl Trick or Treat Bags
How do you avoid gaps in-between vinyl layers?
You usually get gaps between layers if you press with heat too long. Only press for 3 to 5 seconds to get each layer to stick to the tote bag and then once all of your layers are on the bag you press for the full time.
This is one of the reasons I suggest a heat press. It’s much easier to layer and stop your layers from shrinking if you only have to press it once. An iron will cause uneven pressure and probably a little shrinkage of the vinyl.
When in doubt take your time and double/triple check your designs before you press them. It takes a bit of practice to figure this out but you will and your multi-layer crafts will only continue to get better!
How do you make sure your design is in the center of the bag?
I’ll be the first to admit that this is something I used to struggle with so much. I was always rushing through projects and my designs were always crooked and off center.
I wrote a whole post about lining up your heat transfer vinyl on shirts but it really applies to any type of vinyl on fabric/canvas posts. It takes two extra seconds to do and you will always be happy with the finished result of your project!

Monsters INC Iron On Trick or Treat Bags
Learn to make a layered heat transfer vinyl Monsters Inc trick or treat bag for Halloween!
Materials
- Heat Transfer Vinyl
- Weeding Tool
- Canvas Tote
Tools
- Silhouette Cameo
- Cricut EasyPress
Instructions
- Cut and weed your Monsters Inc file. Set it aside.
- Heat your Cricut EasyPress. (if you don't know what settings to use, head here)
- Once heated, press your canvas tote to get out all the wrinkles and set it aside.
- Start layering your pieces of vinyl on the tote bag. Press for 3 seconds and check to see if the vinyl is stuck to your bag. If it isn't, press for another 2-3 seconds and check again.
- Do step 4 with every layer until your entire design is on the bag.
- Then press the entire design for the full amount of time.
- Warm peel your carrier sheet off, and you're done! (if you're doing a double sided design like I did, turn your bag over and repeat steps 4-7)
Notes
- Double and triple check that your layers are lined up before you use your Cricut EasyPress!
- If you put too much heat on your layers they will shrink and cause gaps between the layers as you press. Less is more in this case!
